Entertaining Shrewsbury Since 1947

Abbey Foregate (SURC) Drama Group is a well-established, successful and popular group We have a friendly, welcoming and all inclusive ethos. We meet Mondays and Thursdays to rehearse.  With a total membership of around fifty, acting and non-acting members, we are able to produce two quality plays each year.

Our productions are carefully chosen to provide variety and whether it be comedy, farce, period drama, murder-mystery or musicals, our audiences are assured of a quality production.

We are fortunate to rehearse where we perform and have staging, tiered-seating, lighting and sound systems that transform the hall to an intimate theatre, for an audience of one hundred people.

On the premises, we have an extensive costume store and a workshop where our purpose-built sets are constructed and stored.

The group was founded in 1947 by members of what is now ‘Shrewsbury United Reformed Church’ when sketches were performed to the congregation. This soon led to the production of one, two and three act plays, usually performed twice a year, a busy schedule that has continued.

The drama group is still very much a part of church life, with a nominal 50% of its members coming from within the church. Its reputation has attracted many talented people from outside the church and audiences come from around the county and often further afield.
